Raptor 700 Glowing Header Pipes
« on: January 25, 2009, 06:10:27 PM »
It is Normal, I know they are OK from being a regular forum reader it has been posted more than once. so when I saw it last night it didn't bother me. However, I could definitely see how this would freak a new Raptor owner out.

Maybe we could have a write up stickied somewhere? Or is there, and I am blind?

it's about time someone made this a sticky. lol. i was just going to suggest a sticky for this thread when i saw "headers glowing" on the 700 section of the homepage here. lol.

but yeah from another 700R owner it's normal. no matter what you do the headers are going to glow.

hey peels, when you get your HMF take it for a night ride and run about 3-4 miles at WOT in 5th gear and look at your headers while riding that fast. they will glow all the back to the "Y" pipe and alittle past it. lol. so basicly all the way back to your leg will be red hot.  ::) take some hot dogs or marshmellows.

I have some pics somewhere..  :help:  of my HMF. I had it idleing in the garage for about 5 mins. I was like... whoa.... those things are cherry, turned off the lights and exactly as you said, mine went all the way back to the Y in the pipe!  ::)

If the glow bothers them they can ride in the daylight. It,s kinda pretty around Christmas time. It freaks you out the first time you see it.

Im soooo Glad I saw this thread.. Last night I got my rappy back with the new GYT-R exhaust on, and I rode it for just a few minutes around the house, and when I got back in the shop, I saw the glowing headers.. Kinda freaked me out, but I remembered this thread.

Not really. Lean just makes you too hot.  Pipes glow because thin metal with tight bend right away.

I was told that they glow because of the overlap on the valves causing flames to enter the exhaust. It gets worse when you add a larger cam and nitrous. lol

I never saw my stock header glow (probably because it was permanently cased in mud), but I finished installing the monster duals and holy shit they really glow!  And that was just from idling.  I cannot image how they will look while riding on our night rides up in the woods....

Mine dont glow at throttle.. its fine for them to glow at idle.. becuase there is no exhaust gas velocity.. so the heat isnt moving fast.. but once you give it throttle, you increase the speed of the exhaust gas, and the red should go away.. at night, under normal riding, if your headers glow red, you are probably too lean..

You really only want them glowing at idle..
