With the holidays upon us, I would like to share a personal experience with my friends about drinking and driving. As you may know some of us have been known to have brushes with the authorities from time to time on the way home after a "social session" out with friends. Well, two days ago I was out for an evening with friends and had several scotches followed by some rather nice red wine with dinner.I normally take the bus.
Feeling jolly I still had the sense to know that I may be slightly over the limit. That's when I did something that I've never done before - I took a cab home. Sure enough on the way home there was a police road block but since it was a cab they waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident. Today there was a "Full figured" lady riding on the back of a really small crotch rocket, with a very short skinny guy driving it. The guy in front of me in traffic told him his back tire was low while he was urgently trying to balance the bike at a stop light. The tire I have to admit was on the rim suggesting that it was low before he or she got on the machine. The nice lady on the back of the bike took this honest gesture the wrong way. She retaliated with sign language, body gestures, and profanity. The sign language and body language combined was enough to trigger the inevitable. Bike and riders went down. Much to my surprise the guy who offered the kind suggestion to the riders, "And got em effed for doing so", got out and tried to help them out.
The girl started yelling at the guy who was now out of his truck, while she was trying to recover from the fall.
He got back in his truck.
Told them to "Have a safe ride", and drove away as the light turned green. Like a BAWSS.
I wish that I could report that nobody got hurt, although that was clearly not the case.
As I drove by them, the female was throwing hay makers at her tiny boyfriend.
Looked back just in time to see the knockout punch land flush on his chin.
She dropped him like a bad habit in the middle of the intersection.

I can not get behind the idea that we need to ban something because it has more (perceived) potential to assist someone do a bad thingIt's not solely about a weapon's ability to kill one person, a 22 caliber deringer can accomplish that. It's about a weapon's ability to drastically increase the effectiveness of his "evil" compared to another firearm or weapon. The "potential" is an issue because while it is inevitable that someone will abuse a firearm having fewer, smaller, slower projectiles hopefully equates to fewer injuries and deaths because the "evil person" wasn't able to get off as many rounds and those rounds were less deadly.

There will never be a perfect solution to this issue in a free society where gun ownership is protected by our highest document and mental illness seems to be a difficult to control problem. The only path I can see that even comes close to approaching any chance of modest success is the conservative option above. You can have a gun, but if you use it in the commission of a crime or in any other way abuse your right to own a gun, game over, you are gone from the program for a very very long time. Would that solve all the problems, of course not, but I am open to "better" ideas if anyone has them.

The BBC had visited a shelled out hospital in Syria and spoke with a doc who gave an account of the things he deals with on a daily basis. The story was very emotional for me to hear, imagining the world that he was describing and the selflessness he displayed simply by continuing to show up every day. I thought about the work I had ahead of me that day, the conference calls, the difficult people, and the stress I regularly put myself under. I had some deep introspection about how I had allowed my little corner of the world to envelop and consume me and realized that I'd watched many friends and family members do the same; remembering that at previous times I had thought to myself that "they don't really have any stress in their lives compared to me". I understood in this moment that I, just like those I had dismissed as drama queens, had failed in my quest for humility. I sat there another 15 minutes or so, buried in my own psyche and struggling for perspective.
In the end I realized that, if nothing else, I needed to lighten up. I'm still de-compiling that experience in my idle moments, approximately 2 months later, in an effort to know myself better. What I do know is that my world isn't so bad, and it's important to step back and recognize that as a sanity check once in a while.

I really enjoy reading your well thought/spoken comments. I watched my dad go through these same emotions when he was going through his cancer treatment. Timeline he was given, 5 years would be minimum up until who knows. As he was going through his treatment, he was being rolled down hallways where there were kids no older than 8 laid out on tables or being pushed around in wheel chairs going through the same treatments he's had done. Except, my dad is old enough to know how to cope with those things and has had his time to lead a normal life. Listening to my dad talk like that was an eye opener for me, made all of my problems I have seem very small and insignificant.

This is my wife's little cousin, his father actually stood up for me in our wedding. If you knew his dad you would understand how prepared he was for everything. It really was a suprise for Johnny's birthday and he couldn't believe that his dad (who had passed from an unexpected heart attack about two months before) had one last suprise for him on his birthday. His sister had just posted the videoon facebook so the rest of the family could see his reaction and it blew up pretty fast. Johnny gets lessons once a week and playing guitar in his band is everything to him. I actually suprised him with Alice Cooper tickets for him and I to go later in the year. Just such a happy thing for Johny in such a rough time.
Edit: Wow my post blew up just like the video did. Sorry it took so long to update everyone, I'm not able to use my phone at work and just got home. My wife and I are going over to his house now to give him the tickets and read these amazing comments together.

So SpaceX is disrupting: Satellite development, Rocket development, Rocket launch and services, Internet service infrastructure, and now long distance Earth transport. On top of that they're creating entirely new sectors with tourism/research on the moon and colonization/exploration of Mars.
If a company focused on any individual one of these fields and had any measure of success they'd be a multi-billion dollar company, with SpaceX doing all of them I fully expect them to be a multi-trillion dollar company; and Elon Musk owns over 50% of it.

Long story short, this girl 18 years old, bummed about having brain cancer but has a SUPER good positive attitude that she's going to beat this thing and make people aware. Each update you can see how the cancer takes its physical toll on her but she's optimistic through all of it. I've learned more about cancer in the last 3 years than I have ever cared to know. It's a bummer that each case is so unique. Not that anyone should ever go through it, but fukin kids shouldn't need to go through BS like that.
