Title: Extended stock swinger PICS!
Post by: Out Back Welding on January 06, 2010, 08:59:38 PM
I've been searching all the old threads looking for extended stock swinger pics. Everytime i think i found some, they have been deleted off someones photobucket...lame( i use photobucket atm aswell so guess i cant complain much).

ANYWAY, i have been planning on extending my stock swinger for a long time now. I've got alot of extra time atm so i'm going to go for it. I have extensive cast aluminum welding experience(and i have my dad, he's a cast alluminum welding GERD), so thats not an issue.

I plan on riding HARD as always! I ride trails lots of big rocks, trees, and hills...ect. Can't decide on +2,3,or 4....

The main thing is i need some PICS(give me some, and i promise to return the favor!)! and GOOD advice on things that even the experienced might miss.

THX in advance!

This is a +3 and is perfect for everytype of riding i have done. I havent found a reason to go any longer. On modded raptor kingof bling does them in about any length for between 2-$300.00 shipped. with the plus 3 its not long enough that most people can say wow you got a longer swingger, but for hills, drags and trails i couldnt be more happy  Hope this helps

Thx

The more pics the merry.

Was a new caliper stop made?

Were new mounts for the skid plate made?

How did you keep it perfectly square?

Pics and info on scenario's like this would greatly be appreciated.

Here's a link to the GB thread with pics over at MR.
http://www.moddedraptor.com/community/past-group-buys/2936-extended-stock-swingarm-group-buy-11-1-12-1-a.html (http://www.moddedraptor.com/community/past-group-buys/2936-extended-stock-swingarm-group-buy-11-1-12-1-a.html)
I was looking for a +2 myself but was told the shortest he could do was +3. When it was all said and done I ended up with a +4. Great for a duner but I find it's a little long for trail riding. Not that it makes it difficult to turn, only that it doesn't have the same traction as a stock length swinger. I have a second stock shock, swinger, chain I use for my trail set-up.
Only the front mounts need to be redone as you need the rears as a reference point to mount skids. In the GB you could have them added for an additional $20, but all that was done was holes drilled and tapped. I was quite unimpressed by that as the material thickness in that area only allows for a couple threads. I thought we were getting some sort of bung or post welded in that would offer much greater support and strength. Having said that I haven't had any issues (touch wood) with pulling the threads out so far.
Hope that helps.

I saw SprinterX's swinger in person a few month back at a rally, and I have to say I was very impressed. Awesome sleeper look, but if you look close I think it comes out looking even cleaner than a stock arm. KOB's guy does some good work.

Kirk, were you telling me that he was actually doing something as far as adding further bracing to the arms when he extends them, as opposed to just weldong a new section piece in/on ? I forget if that was you or someone else telling me that ? Very nice upgrade for the sand IMO !

Not sure if it was me or not. With the carrier out, you can see additional supports/bracing internally where the weld-in section is. KOB assured me he has pounded on his for some time with no issues at all. I'm not a "go big" jumper but I've pounded thru some pretty tough whoops with it and it's all good.

Got it taken apart this afternoon, so i could look at it real well. Everything came apart real smooth.

I think i might have to make a "V cut", instead of just making a 90 degree square cut, because of the caliper stop.

I didnt take any pics of taking it apart, because thats just boring.

I'm going to have to make a jig for it first before i cut it. This way i can cut it, slide it,add bracing, and make a piece to fill gap(so to speak).

Any advice on the bracing?

Any advice on where/how exactly to cut it?

Any advice on how to set up jig, so the final piece will be square?

All the previous pics and advice have been very helpfull, keep it coming

Having no clue about anything else, all I can offer is make sure you extend it behind the shock mount, not in front.

Yeah thats for sure.

Gave some thought of cutting it forward of it, but that would be way to much work. Extending it would be easier, but moving the shock mounts, ect.. wouldn't be that easy.

An interesting fact, the inside diameter of the bore is 3.5 in. which i believe is the same as schedual 40 3 in. Not 100% sure but was thinking of making a jig using that advatage.

dpe_ele - you are correct in wanting to do an angle cut

I went through the group buy from KOB and his welder did an excellent job. I went with the +4 and it has been one of the best mods I have ever done. 1badazz_700 was in the same group buy too. His pics look great too. He left his bare aluminum and I powder coated mine. If you look really, really, really, really close you can see the angle cut and weld line after the grinding right behind the shock mount. KOB powder coated one before and it bubbled on him and he advised me not to powder but my local powder guy stated he could do it. Ask anyone for the rally at LS Oklahoma about mine because I got a few compliments. If you have any question I can send you my number.
Good luck.

That's awesome, that sends me somewhat in a good direction.

I have yet another question.

I was noticing when i took it all apart that the e-brake and brake line are probably going to come up short. What was done to address this issue?

I ordered a custom parking brake cable from motion pro for $30ish included shipping. I thought that was a great price because it fit like a champ. Looks identical to the OEM. The brake line I ordered a longer one from TQS.

Matt, do you got contact info for KOB, I haven't seen him around lately ???

Jig
You'll need something up front on either side that would allow the swingarm pivot bolt to be installed and locate that end.
At the rear I'll think you'll want to pick up off the carrier mount ID so things stay square relative to the front.
It's pretty hard trying to describe how to build a jig but being square/true should obviously be perimount. Having the ability to lengthen it while maintaining true is also just as important.

Bracing
From what I could see inside mine with the carrier removed was a single plate approx 1/8-3/16 thick, mounted vertically. It was welded to the top and bottom. It extended all the way aft and was actually trimmed to allow for the carrier installation. How far fwd it extended I couldn't see but I would assume as far as possible to pick up the loading from the shock linkage mounts.

Not sure any of this helps.

Not anymore. I used to PM him on modded so try that if you want. Someone had stated his fabricator got hurt but that was a while back. I believe Gunny tried to get him to do a swinger and that fell thru.

K, we actually decided not to make much of a jig(going to make a "one time" type thing), because we thought it would have been a ton of work for just making one that would work "perfectly"(all though we had some awesome jig ideas). So we decided to "perfectly wing it". We decided to literally tack it down to a big thick square piece of aluminum(we have almost unlimited supply of aluminum).

We took ALOT of measurements before we finally had it in place good enough to tack, but its within 0.001"(we have a nice set of calipers on hand).

I'll post pics of whats done so far later tonight.

Worked on it for a bit today, didn't have much time, but got the internal bracing near complete. We plan on extending the external stock rib bracing, to make it look even more stock, but that will be one of the last steps.

Yeah, very cheap indeed! Same reason i'm doing mine myself.

I figure all my expenses will be in extending the brake cable/line, sending the rear shock off to get redone, and if i decide to powdercoat.

Today I went to the local shop and got all the ball rolling on the reassemble.

took rear shock in for new spring, rebuild, and revalve.
ordered longer e-brake cable.
longer brake line.
longer o-ring chain.
new front 15t sprocket.   ALL for $368.53

Still need to add in those fin style gussets.
Then i can remove it from the jig and weld the bottom.
Then i can do the fun part and make it look like it was never even welded.

If you haven't mounted her up yet, it might be interesting to get the weight to compare to an OEM arm just for shits and giggles. I know most the people concerned about weight would be buying laddered swinger and such, but still I think- good info since you've got it.

Here it is painted, we went to the local moto shop and got it weighed.

We used Rustoleum Hammered Black, it worked freakin awesome for blending the transition from the smooth to the rough cast. It looks like its all cast and we just painted it...amazing stuff, they should call it Rustoleum "Casting Look" paint.

any chance of re-locating or just adding the forward skid bolt bosses so that you can still use a skid plate?

I removed the old holes, welded them up, and buffed em down where u cant tell they were even there. Then i drilled and tapped 2 new holes. So yeah, its going to have the skid mounted back up after the shock is in place

Ok, so without reading through all 5 pages, is there someone on this site that is doing them, I have 2 spare swingarms, I'd like to get at least one if not both extended.

King of Bling from the other two Raptor sites can hook you up with extending your stock swinger. There was a group buy last year on them. I had a +4 done for my sand set-up and the work is nice.

dpe_ele's work here looks excellent too.

 8) Thx for all the complements!

I got my spring and o-ring in today, should have everything togeather tomarrow

We would love to make more of these, should have made a jig.... :'(

We used all my dads tools to do this, complements of Out Back Aluminum Welding!

We were giving some thought as to how much to charge for something like this. This wouldnt be something that We could do in the summer, due to the fact that Out Back is booked with work during that time.

So what do u guys think something like this would be worth shipped back to your door? Top dollar? Would it be easier to just swap cores?

I see stock swingers for sale on ebay from $50-100.

If you start making them, I'll be first in line and I'll send you two swingarms, one to do for me and one for you to keep as your "core". :)

Let me know when/if you start doing them.

It wasn't actually KoB that was doing the work. I believe it was a buddy of his from Cycle Works. I'd be surprised if he wouldn't do any more.

Take note when looking for an aftermarket brake line. You want one where the bango fittings are at 90* to each other.

That's great, mine were swagged the same and I had to twist them slightly to fit. Good thing I bought one that was a little extra lengthy.

I purchased a +3 brake line and it look all crap, so I just purchased some line and fittings and made my own and it looks a lot better. So I guess what I'm saying is purchase your own stuff and make it.

yes but you have to drill 2 holes for the front 2 bolts. I tigged a couple of 3/4" circle pieces of aluminum to swinger where it bolts to give it some more meat for the bolts to thread into.

I weld in new boss's. I use 5/8" round stock and cut 3/4"...drill,tap, ect.. so you have lots of threads to work with!!

These are well built all around :)

I am thinking of getting a +4 or longer and really thinking of pulling the trigger and getting this done on my 09 700SE

I have a few questions to make sure that I can get all the needed parts for the project with the budget I have on hand now. Have a trip coming soon and don't want any issues and hold ups.

What chain to get? I have no knowledge on type and length. Ride mostly on sand!

Rear brake line? I see TQS sells the Galfer Brake Line ($49.00) in a +4 length, will that work?

Rear brake parking cable? not really worried about that.  I am sure I can come up with something.

Anything else that I may need for the +4 setup besides the +4 swing arm???

Thanks in advance!!

I'm yet to see an extended parking cable, so you may have to get ninja with that (moving the parking brake elsewhere).
My suggestion would be to buy a 120link chain and cut it down to what you need vs trying to find a specific / perfect length one. Way eaiser :)

If you ride mostly sand, I know duners opt for the non-oring chains. I still always prefered the X ring chains.

I'd have to do some looking, but I believe the +4 line is actually a bit longer than what you need. But I can't remember 100% for sure.

I went to the Galfer website and I can order a brake line to the exact size I'll need since I am still unsure it will be a +4 or longer swing arm.

Either way thanks for the help!!!

Motion Pro cable make you a e-brake cable last I heard it was about 35.00. For you brake line I ordered some S.S brake line, and some fitting and made my own line and it was cheap to do and looks great.

Spot on. Thats what I did.

The motion pro broke after 1 year of use... put the stock cable back on. Relocating it to the frame(left side).

I just got a long chain and cut it down.. as krandal said  Don't buy China!  BUY Taiwan or Japanese :)
